Two lawful routes to residency in Hungary
The White Card is Hungary's digital nomad visa, aimed at remote employees and owners of companies based outside the country. It calls for verified net income of €3,000 a month over the six months before you apply. The second route, a residence permit for guest self-employment, goes to the chief executive of a Hungarian company: one year to start, extendable within a three-year limit. The statutory processing period is 21 days, which excludes time spent on document requests and other procedural steps. Only the second route allows family members to join, and not before the first year has passed.
At a glance
Each point feeds directly into the decision taken by the consulate and the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF)
The two permits work on opposite principles and are not interchangeable. Which one fits comes down to where your income is earned and whether your family is coming with you.
Fehér Kártya, Hungary's digital nomad visa
For people who work remotely for an employer abroad or run their own company outside Hungary. All income must stay foreign: no Hungarian clients and no stake in a Hungarian business.
Requirements and documentsResidence permit for guest self-employment
For the chief executive of a Hungarian company. This route asks you to show that the business genuinely trades in the country, but it allows family from the second year and works over a longer horizon.
Requirements for the company| Criterion | White Card | Business route |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Remote employees of a foreign company, or shareholders in a profitable company based abroad | The chief executive of a Hungarian company |
| Core requirement | Net income from €3,000 a month across the six months before you apply, maintained throughout the permit | Genuine trading activity: either five full-time staff for six months, or evidence that the director's presence is essential |
| Validity and renewal | 1 year, renewable once for a further year. Two years in total | 1 year, renewable for up to two more. Three years in total, then a fresh application |
| Working or holding shares in Hungary | Prohibited; the permit is withdrawn if you do either | This is what the permit is for |
| Family | Family reunification is not available | Closed for the first year, available afterwards |
| Time spent in Hungary | 90 days in any 180-day period to renew | 90 days in any 180-day period, plus regular reporting through Enter Hungary |
| National Residence Card | Not available | Not available |
Choose the White Card if
Your income already comes from an employer abroad or from your own company outside Hungary, you are moving on your own, and you want a lawful base in the EU for up to two years.
Choose the business route if
You are prepared to run a real business in Hungary, you plan to bring your family over, and you are looking at a horizon longer than two years.

A permit for people whose income is earned entirely outside Hungary. It runs for one year with a single renewal, and it rules out working for a Hungarian employer or holding a stake in a Hungarian company.
Net income a month. Evidenced across the six months before you apply and held throughout the permit
Maximum length of stay. One year to begin with, plus a single renewal for one more
Statutory processing period. Time spent on document requests falls outside it
Remote employee
An employment relationship with an employer outside Hungary, with the work itself carried out from Hungary through digital technology. Your employer confirms its field of business, your right to work remotely and the role you hold.
Owner of a company abroad
A shareholding in a profitable company outside Hungary that you run remotely. You evidence the company's registration, its genuine trading activity, your role and the size of your stake.
A White Card is refused if you meet the conditions for another permit: guest self-employment, guest investor, employment, the National Card, the Hungarian Card or the Corporate Card.
Step 1
Preparation
Gathering documents, checking six months of income, translation and legalisation
Step 2
Submission
A consulate in your country of citizenship, or Enter Hungary if you travel visa-free
Step 3
Biometrics
Photograph, fingerprints and signature sample within 15 days of acknowledgement
Step 4
Decision
21 days on paper, excluding document requests; the decision follows within 30 days
Step 5
Entry and card
A D visa valid 30 days, entry within three months, the card arrives by post
What to weigh up before you apply
Four restrictions that most often come as a surprise once the card is already in hand.
No work inside Hungary
Working for a Hungarian employer or acquiring a stake in a Hungarian company leads to withdrawal of the permit.
Your family cannot join you
Family reunification is closed on this route. The only exception is a child born in Hungary while the permit is valid.
You cannot switch routes from inside Hungary
Applying for another type of permit within the country is barred both while the White Card is valid and after it expires.
One renewal, and only from Hungary
You will need to have spent at least 90 days in any 180-day period in the country, and to file through Enter Hungary.

This permit goes to the chief executive of a Hungarian company. Unlike the White Card it allows you to work and hold shares in the country, but you have to show that the business genuinely trades and that your presence is essential to it.
Maximum length of stay. One year on the first card, then renewal for up to two more
Your family can apply for reunification once the permit has been held for a year
Corporate income tax. The lowest headline rate in the European Union
A company with staff
The company has lawfully employed at least five Hungarian nationals, or people with free movement rights, on full-time contracts without interruption for at least six months.
A case for the business
Your presence in Hungary is essential to the company's operations, and a detailed declaration on business activity shows that it will reach a level of revenue that supports you. Backed by service, agency, supply and sales contracts.
Hiring five people is not compulsory. The second route exists precisely for companies without a team of that size, and in practice it is the one used more often.
The company is set up before the permit application
The standard vehicle for this route is a Kft, the Hungarian equivalent of a limited liability company. Share capital is HUF 3,000,000, roughly €7,700. That is a requirement of Hungarian company law, not an investment threshold set by an immigration programme: the money stays in your company and works in its cash flow.
Company registration in HungaryStep 1
Company registration
A Kft, registered office, tax number and your appointment as director
Step 2
Starting to trade
Contracts, a bank account, bookkeeping and, if the route calls for it, hiring
Step 3
Submission
A consulate, or Enter Hungary if you travel visa-free and this is a first application
Step 4
Decision
21 days on paper, excluding document requests and other procedural steps
Step 5
Card and reporting
A D visa, the card by post, then regular reports through Enter Hungary
What to weigh up before you apply
The route is open and workable, but it carries four conditions that reviews rarely mention.
Regular reporting is mandatory
Reports go through Enter Hungary. Inaccurate information is taken into account when the permit is renewed and when withdrawal is considered.
Family only from the second year
Reunification is closed for the first year. The exception is a child born in Hungary while the permit is valid.
You cannot switch routes from inside Hungary
Holding this permit rules out applying in Hungary for an employment permit or for the Hungarian Card.
No National Residence Card
After three years a fresh permit has to be issued, and the application is filed no later than 40 days before the current one expires.

Government fees are the same on both routes and depend only on where you file. Every figure below comes from the official schedule published by the OIF.
Filing at a consulate, including the visa to collect the card
€110
Filing in Hungary through Enter Hungary
HUF 26,000
Filing in Hungary in person at a regional directorate
HUF 39,000
Renewing the permit
HUF 26,000
Replacing or reissuing the card
HUF 20,000
These fees do not cover translation and legalisation of documents, health insurance or, on the business route, the cost of setting up and running the company.
Corporate income tax
Personal income tax, a single rate with no bands
VAT, the highest headline rate in the European Union
Threshold for tax residency in a calendar year
Dividends are taxed at 15% plus a 13% social contribution, capped annually. A residence permit does not create tax residency on its own: the general rules and the applicable double taxation treaties decide that.
What happens after two or three years
The most common question on both routes, and the point where published guides most often get it wrong.
National Residence Card
Holders of a White Card or a guest self-employment permit cannot obtain one. The OIF states this directly in its guidance on both routes. The widely repeated claim that the business route leads to settled status after three years does not match the current rules.
EU Residence Card
A separate regime: five years of lawful, uninterrupted residence, plus evidence of accommodation, income and healthcare cover. Neither of our two categories appears on the OIF list of excluded groups. Since 2025 a Hungarian cultural knowledge exam is also required. Processing takes 70 days and the card is issued for 10 years.
The White Card is capped at two years and does not allow you to switch routes from inside the country. On the business route a fresh permit has to be issued after three years. No official guidance explains how those periods count towards the five-year requirement. We do not promise long-term status on either route, and we say so before any work begins.

Still not finding your answer? Send us your details, and we will look at your situation and tell you which of the two routes fits.
Book a consultationThe deciding factor is not budget but where your income comes from. The White Card is built for income earned outside Hungary: an employment relationship with a foreign employer, or a shareholding in a profitable company abroad that you run remotely. While you hold it you cannot work for a Hungarian employer or own a stake in a Hungarian business, and breaching either leads to withdrawal of the permit. The business route works the other way round: you are the chief executive of a Hungarian company, and that company has to genuinely trade in the country. Two practical differences settle most cases: the White Card gives you two years at most and no family, while the business route runs to three years and opens family reunification from the second year.
There is no minimum presence requirement to obtain the card, but renewal is a different matter on both routes: you need to have actually spent at least 90 days in any 180-day period in the country. The OIF sets this out directly in its renewal conditions, and it rules out the popular plan of taking the status and visiting once a year, because the renewal simply will not be approved. On the business route you also have a regular reporting obligation through Enter Hungary, and inaccurate information in those reports counts against you both at renewal and in withdrawal proceedings.
Not on the White Card. Family members cannot obtain a reunification permit while the card is valid or when it is renewed. The single exception is a child born in Hungary during the permit: once the birth is registered, the child receives a permit for family reunification. On the business route reunification is closed for the first year from the date the permit is issued, and open afterwards. If moving as a family is part of the plan, only the second route delivers it, and the composition of the application is worth settling before you file rather than after you arrive.
The National Residence Card, Hungary's own permanent residence status, is not available on either route: the OIF states this directly in its guidance on both the White Card and guest self-employment. The frequently repeated claim that the business route delivers permanent residence after three years does not match the current rules. Separately there is the EU Residence Card regime: five years of lawful, uninterrupted residence, evidence of accommodation, income and healthcare cover, and since 2025 a Hungarian cultural knowledge exam as well. Neither of our two categories appears on the OIF list of excluded groups. That said, the White Card is capped at two years and does not allow a change of route from inside the country, while the business route requires a fresh permit after three years, and no official guidance explains how those periods count towards the five-year requirement. We do not promise long-term status, and we say so before any work begins.
Renewal is available once, for one year, giving two years in total. After that you cannot change route from inside Hungary: applying in the country for another type of permit is barred both while the White Card is valid and once it has expired. There is one practical way forward, which is to leave and file a fresh application on another basis from abroad. Build that into your plan at the outset rather than a month before the card runs out, because preparing a new basis takes several months.
No. Five employees is only one of two ways to evidence the permit: the company employs at least five Hungarian nationals, or people with free movement rights, full-time and without interruption for at least six months. The second way is to show that your presence in Hungary is essential to the company's operations and to file a detailed declaration on business activity demonstrating that the business will reach a level of revenue that supports you. The declaration is backed by real contracts for services, agency, supply and sales. This route was written into the law precisely for companies without a large team, and it is the one used more often.
Yes, the guest self-employment permit also covers working as a registered Hungarian sole trader. The requirements are different: annual income from the business has to exceed 24 times the minimum wage, which in 2026 works out at roughly HUF 7.7 million, with the monthly minimum wage set at HUF 322,800. You will also need a certificate confirming no tax or contribution arrears. For most clients the Kft route is more comfortable: it scales better, it lets you bring in partners, and it does not tie your immigration status directly to your personal turnover.
It depends on whether you need a visa to enter. If you do, the application goes to the Hungarian consulate in your country of citizenship or habitual residence, and there is no separate visa to request: it is built into the permit application. Where no Hungarian consulate operates in your country of residence, filing in the country where you are lawfully staying is allowed by way of exception, but you will have to document the reasons. If you travel visa-free and hold no permit yet, you can file inside Hungary: through Enter Hungary or in person at a regional directorate of the OIF. Where a lawyer or a legal entity acts as your representative, Enter Hungary is the only channel. Renewals are filed inside the country in every case.
Not automatically. The residence card does not create tax residency on its own: the general rules of the Hungarian personal income tax act apply, along with the relevant double taxation treaties. The main markers are 183 days spent in the country during the year, together with your habitual abode and your centre of vital interests. If residency does arise, personal income tax is a flat 15%. For the company, corporate income tax is 9%, and dividends are taxed at 15% plus a 13% social contribution that is capped annually. The specific structure is worth modelling with an accountant before you move.
A refusal can be appealed, but the window is very short: eight days from receiving the decision, filed with the first-instance authority or with the consulate where you applied. The appeal fee is HUF 47,000. An appeal is rejected without consideration of its merits if it is late, if it comes from someone not entitled to file it, if it is submitted without reasons, or if it relies on facts the applicant already knew before the decision was taken. In practice it is often more effective to fix the underlying problem and file again, though which path makes sense depends on the grounds for refusal.
No provider can guarantee that a residence permit will be granted. The decision rests with the OIF, which is entitled to request further documents and carry out other procedural steps beyond the mandatory annexes, and the time this takes falls outside the statutory period. Anyone promising a guaranteed outcome should be treated with caution. What we can do is different: address the issues that most commonly lead to refusal before you file, tell you plainly if neither route suits your situation, and avoid the time lost to a second attempt.
